Orentano is a village (a frazione of Castelfranco di Sotto) in the flat countryside of northern Tuscany — close to the geographic heart of the region, which is exactly what makes it a good base: Lucca, Pisa, San Miniato and Vinci are all within about 40 minutes by car, and Florence about an hour.

By car

A car is by far the easiest way to reach and explore the area.

• From the A11 Firenze–Pisa Nord motorway, exit at Altopascio, then follow signs south towards Orentano (about 10 minutes).
• From the FI-PI-LI expressway (Florence–Pisa–Livorno), exit at Santa Croce sull'Arno or Montopoli, cross the Arno and head north through Castelfranco di Sotto (about 20 minutes).

By plane

• Pisa – Galileo Galilei (PSA) is the closest airport, about 35 km away — roughly 40 minutes by car.
• Florence – Amerigo Vespucci (FLR) is about 55 km away via the A11.

Both airports have car-hire desks; from either, driving is much simpler than public transport for this part of Tuscany. Parking in the village is free and easy; just beware the camera-enforced ZTL zones when you drive into the historic centres of Lucca, Pisa and the other towns — park outside the walls and walk in.

By train

There is no station in Orentano itself. The most useful stations nearby:

• Altopascio (Florence–Lucca line) — the nearest, about 8 km away.
• San Miniato–Fucecchio (Florence–Pisa line) — about 12 km away.

From either station you will need a taxi or a lift into the village, so check connections before you rely on the train.

Getting around

Orentano itself is small and completely walkable — you can cross the village on foot in ten minutes. Lucca, Pisa, Vinci and San Miniato are all easy day trips by car.
